---カオハガン島の紹介---

カオハガン島は、北緯10度に位置している熱帯の島です。フィリピン共和国の中央部、セブ島とボホール島の間にあります。「オランゴ島環礁」と呼ばれている珊瑚礁の環があって、そのネックレスのような珊瑚礁の環の上に乗っている一粒の真珠のような美しい島がカオハガン島です。
面積は、約5万平米、そして人口は約700人。珊瑚礁の海と、白い砂浜の海岸に囲まれた南の島で、ココ椰子の木がたくさん生え、海を渡ってきた爽やかな風が島を吹き抜けていきます。“南の島”というイメージがぴったりな島です。
しかし、カオハガン島は、いわゆる“リゾート”ではありません。訪問者が島民たちと接し、一緒に考えることができる島なのです。平和に、リラックスすることができ、たくさんの文化が交流しています。自然のすばらしさを体験することができ、自然と人類との関係を考えさせられます。そして、たくさんのすばらしい人たちと出会える場所であり、２１世紀の価値観を考えさせられる場所なのです。人々が思い描いて、追い求めていたような場所が、カオハガン島にあります。



---カオハガン・ハウスの紹介---

ベストセラーになった「何もなくて豊かな島」の著者、崎山克彦が1987年にカオハガン島に出逢い、退職金で島を購入しました。
崎山は、島のために何をすべきか考えた末、「カオハガン・ハウス」という宿泊施設の建設を始め、島民に収入の道を作るため、スタッフとして雇い始めました。
当初は崎山の友人が訪れていましたが、1995年に「何もなくて豊かな島」がベストセラーになると、本を読んだゲストが訪れるようになりました。
それ以来、現在もたくさんのゲストがカオハガン・ハウスを訪れ、にぎわっています。リピーターが多く、島にお戻りの際には「おかえりなさい」とお迎えしています。
そのカオハガン・ハウスでは、島民が良い形で収入が得られるようにと、島の伝統的な手仕事や、島の自然素材を使ったものをそのまま、もしくはアレンジしておみやげとして販売しています。



---カオハガン・キルトとは---

1996年、崎山の妻、順子が紹介したことで、カオハガン島でキルト創りが始まりました。
現在では70人以上の人がカオハガンでキルトを創っており、キルターたちにとって大切な収入源です。
カオハガン島にある自然や動物たち、すべての要素が、キルターにとって大切で欠かせません。それは、毎日の暮らしの中で切り離せない関係ということです。カオハガン島は小さな島ですので、すべての動植物が関係し合って、お互いに助け合いながら生きています。カオハガンのキルターが自然の暮らしで培った感性を生かして、暖かく、開放的で、そして郷愁にかられるような作品を楽しく創りだします。カオハガン・キルトを見ると、しあわせを感じ、リラックスしてしまうのです。　



---カオハガン・キルトの特徴---

1.キルトを一枚創るのに、3ヶ月以上かかります。一人のキルターが、ラフなスケッチも考えないで、縫い始めます。朝から晩まで縫っています。そうしてすばらしいキルトが出来上がるのです。世界で一枚しかないキルトです。

2.日常生活の何にでも使ってください。ベッド・カバー、カーペット、ソファーのカバー、そしてもちろん部屋の飾りとしても、何にでも使えます。結婚式や、出産、そして新築のお祝いなどに、とてもすばらしいギフトとなります。

3.ご自宅の洗濯機でも洗えます。すべてのキルトは、完成する前に数回洗ってありますから、色落ちをすることはありません。

4.キルトからの収入のすべては、キルターたちのために使われています。そして、カオハガンの皆の人たちの、教育、病気の治療などの福祉にも使われています。

---Introduction of Caohagan Island ---

Caohagan is a tropical island located at lat. 10°N. in the central part of the Republic of the Philippines between Cebu and Bohol. There is a coral reef atoll called the "Orango Atoll" and Caohagan Island is the beautiful island like a pearl on Orango Atoll "necklace".
The area is about 50,000 square meters and the population is about 700. The island is surrounded by coral reef waters and white sandy beaches and abounding in coconut trees. And the fresh wind that came across the sea blows through the island. The image of "a southern island" is perfect for this island.
However, Caohagan is not a "resort". It is a place where visitors can come in contact with the islanders and think together. You can relax peacefully and there is a lot of cultural exchange. You can also experience the wonders of nature, and it makes you think about the relationship between nature and mankind.
And it's a place where you can meet a lot of great people and think about the values of the 21 century. This is the kind of place we imagined and pursued.



---Introduction of Caohagan House---

Katsuhiko Sakiyama, the author of the bestselling book "an empty and rich island", found Caohagan Island in 1987 and purchased it with his retirement allowance. After thinking about what to do for the island, Sakiyama started to run a hotel called "Caohagan House" and began to hire staffs to help the islanders earn money.
At first, friends of Sakiyama's visited here, but when "an empty and rich island" became a bestseller in 1995, guests who read the book began to come.
Since then, many guests have visited Caohagan House.
There are many repeat customers, and we welcome them saying "Welcome home" when they return to the island.
We are selling traditional handmade island products or products made with natural island materials as souvenirs in order for islanders to earn a good income.



---What is Caohagan Quilt?---

In 1996, Ms. Junko Sakiyama, introduced quilt making to people in Caohagan.
Now, more than 70 people make quilts in Caohagan, and it has been being an important income for quilters.
The nature and animals of Caohagan Island are all important to the kilter. They are companions of his/her everyday life and are inseparable relationships in everyday life. Caohagan Island is a small island, so all animals and plants are related to each other, and they help each other. Each quilters makes use of the sensibilities cultivated in natural life to create appearing joyful, heart-warming, open and nostalgic works.
Seeing Caohagan quilt really makes you feel at home, happy and relaxing.



---Characteristics of Caohagan Quilts---

1. A quilter spends more than 3 months for making one quilt. the quilter just starts sewing without making rough sketch from the morning to the evening every day, and they finish making a piece of wonderful quilt. The quilts are all one-of-a-kind.

2. You can use it with any situation in your daily life. Use for your bed as a bed cover, a carpet, a cover for your sofa, and of course for decoration. And also good as a gift for wedding, a new baby, new house and so on.

3. You can wash it in washing machine. All quilts are already washed a few times, so its color will not come out.

4. All the sales from the quilts is paid for quilters. The sales from the quilt is spent on supporting welfare of the people in Caohagan such as their health-care and education.
